intelliRock Software & Spreadsheets : How to export and import logger files

    Author: Spork
Subject: How to export and import logger files
Posted: 21 Jul 2010 at 11:03am

**Please read through the entire post before starting, it may help you avoid problems along the way!**

When you download your logger data from the hand-held reader to your computer, the intelliRock software takes the raw binary data for each logger and creates a secure data file identified by the .irock extension. These .irock files, along with the .csv spreadsheet files that are created, are stored in the software's Jobs folder. It is these .irock files that contain the data that the software displays, and that it uses to create the spreadsheets.

In order to copy a logger from one computer to another and have the intelliRock software on the new computer recognize the logger, you must transfer the .irock file to the new computer. The .csv file will be automatically generated on the new computer from the data contained in the .irock file so it is not necessary to transfer the .csv file, only the .irock file.

Perhaps the easiest way to send a logger to another computer is to right-click on it in the software tree view on the left and select "Send To --> Mail recipient (binary format)..."

This will use your default email client to send the .irock file as an attachment to an email. For single loggers this is probably the easiest method assuming your default email client is correctly configured to work like this. If it isn't, or if you want to transfer many files at one time then another method is needed. For this other method, we start by locating the .irock files to transfer on your computer.

Here is an example of some .irock files (along with the associated .csv files) in a typical Jobs folder

***Note: if the computer with the original .irock files has been updated from an older version of the intelliRock software in the past, then you may have to replace "intelliRock" in the paths below with "rockWare" in order to find the default Jobs folder.***

Finding the jobs folder is pretty straightforward on Windows XP, it is located by default at

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\intelliRock\Jobs

Even though the "Application Data" directory is hidden by default, you can type it into the address bar at the top and access it in XP. If you have changed the location of your Jobs folder then of course you can browse to it in its current location to find the .irock files.

In Windows Vista/Windows 7 things have changed a bit. The intelliRock folder is now in a hidden folder called "ProgramData". In order to find this folder you must first make the hidden files visible. From an explorer window, select "Organize" and go down to "Folder and Search options" as shown below.

Click this and "Folder Options" dialog will appear. Click the "View" tab at the top and then scroll down through the "Advanced Settings" box until you see "Hidden files and folders" - shown circled in red below.

Put the dot next to "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" and click "OK" to apply the settings and dismiss the dialog box. Now you will be able to view the hidden "ProgramData" folder.

The default location of the Jobs folder in Windows Vista/Windows 7 is

C:\ProgramData\intelliRock\Jobs

Of course, if you have changed the location of your Jobs folder then you can browse to it in its current location to find the .irock files.

Once you have located the .irock files you are ready to proceed to copying them. Now, there are any number of ways to transfer the files from one computer to another. This can be done over a network, by attaching the .irock files to email messages, by USB flash drive, by CD/DVD, or any other way of transferring files. The important thing is getting the .irock file to the new computer.

Whether you email the files or transfer them on some other device, once they are on the new computer we need to let the intelliRock software know that there here. The software installer should have made the association between .irock files and the intelliRock software at installation time - if this is the case then all you should need to do is double-click the .irock file (or tell your email client to open the file if it is an email attachment). Windows will automatically open up the intelliRock software (if its not already open) and the software will import the logger to the new computer just as if it had downloaded it from the reader - complete with creating the jobname folder and a .csv file. The software will display a message after it has imported the logger to let you know it was successful.

This must be done for each logger that you wish to import on the new computer. If all has gone well, you are done.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If, for some reason Windows doesn't know what application to use to open the .irock files, after double-clicking (or telling your email client to open the attachment) you will end up with an "Open with" dialog box like this one shown here, only yours probably won't have anything listed under "Recommended Programs".

If this is the case, then first place a check in the box beside "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" - this will let Windows know to remember your selection - and then click the "Browse" button. This will open a browse box as shown below.

Browse to C:\Program Files\intelliRock and click the "intelliRock" file as shown in the figure above. Then click the "Open" button in the lower right corner of the box. Now things should proceed as described previously in this post, and Windows should start the intelliRock software (if its not already running) and you should get the imported logger message shown a few pictures above. Since you checked the box earlier then Windows should remember to always use intelliRock to open .irock files from now on and you shouldn't have do to this again. Now you can proceed to double-click the rest of the .irock files (or open the email attachments) to import them into the software.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are still having problems after going through the above steps then give us a call at the number found on our contact page and we'll try to dig in a little deeper.

Edited by Spork - 21 Jul 2010 at 7:33pm

intelliRock Software & Spreadsheets : Fix for error messages on startup in Windows 7

    Author: Spork
Subject: Fix for error messages on startup in Windows 7
Posted: 21 Jul 2010 at 8:49am

If you've recently installed the intelliRock software on Windows 7 then you've more than likely seen a number of error messages like the one below pop up each time you start the program.

Clicking "OK" or "Cancel" on each one of the messages will eventually get you into the software and everything will work normally, but these messages are annoying and we'd like to get rid of them.

While there are several ways of getting rid of these messages, the simplest and most straightforward is to change the intelliRock software shortcut to make it run with Administrator privileges. To do this, locate the shortcut that launches the program, either on the desktop or in your start menu. Right-click the icon and go all the way to the bottom of that menu to the entry for "Properties". Click "Properties" and you will open a dialog box with several tabs across the top. Click the tab labeled "Compatibility" and go to the bottom of the tab, there you will see a check box with the words "Run this program as administrator" to the right of it.

Put a check in this box and then click "Apply". After that click "OK" and the dialog will disappear. Now when you start up the software you will be running as an Administrator with access privileges to the files that were causing the errors to appear before.

If you do not have Administrator privileges on the computer you're using, you'll have to have a member of your IT department either apply the fix described in this post, or have them give us a call and we'll let them know what needs to happen to make the errors go away. Again, these errors don't affect the operation of the program but are the result of the tighter file security in the newer versions of Windows.

-Spork

FOR THE TECHNICALLY CURIOUS:

These messages show up because these files were "created" by the install program and the owner of these files is the "System" - not your user. Since you aren't the owner of the files, Windows doesn't allow your user account to access these files by default. Microsoft has changed the way file ownership and permissions are handled under the new versions of Windows to enhance security and decrease the potential for malware to get access to sensitive areas of you computer - so this is actually a good thing. We'll be working to eliminate this issue in future releases of the intelliRock software. If you are interested in learning about the "other ways" to eliminate these messages that were mentioned in the post, the give us a call here and we'll explain the procedure(s) to you.

In addition, it generates various graphs from the data contained in the logs of the imported loggers including:

A temperature graph of all loggers on the same set of axes

A graph of the maximum differential temperature between any two placement loggers

A graph showing the average temperature value of all placement loggers, the lowest temperature at every log interval and a user-entered low temperature limit line.

Q: Where do I get them?

A: From the spreadsheet page of the publications section of the Engius main website - click the Publications link in the extreme upper right corner of this page and then click the Spreadsheets link on the left side of the page that comes up. You can also click the links in the descriptions above to be taken directly to the download pages from the Engius website.

Edited by Spork - 23 Mar 2010 at 9:19am
